Friday, 14th of August, KTH Racing together with 3 Swedish Formula Student teams (LU Racing, Chalmers Formula Student and Clear River Racing) showed up at STCC event in Karlskoga. During the day we had a seminar with famous personalities in Swedish motor sport, such as Tony Ring, Jonas Jarlmark and others.
The day ended up with an Endurance race on Karlskoga track (also known as Gelleråsen), the oldest track in Sweden. The track was modified with cones so that it was suitable for Formula Student Cars, but it was bigger than usual and truly fast as well. There were 5 cars on the track and safety was prioritized since the cars reached speeds of nearly 150 km/h. Clear River Racing’s car lost one of its wheels, but nobody got hurt. KTH R6 has been repaired after the breakdown at Hockenheimring and performed well. The race was spectacular for all the visitors, who had a good chance to see what Formula Student is about.
Big thanks to Pialill Ring from Swedish Motorsport Industry, who helped us to organize the event!
Our next challenge will be Baltic Open, a Formula Student competition, which will take place in Helsinki, Finland during 20-21 of August.
Wednesday 12th of August, 2009, 21:14
The team arrived to Hockenheim on wednesday as scheduled. This year, the registration to the competition has been changed, and the queue order is given by the arrival of every team. KTH Racing recieved number 72, which was later shown to be critical to the success of the team.
This also meant that KTH Racing was in place number 72 in the scrutineering line. Since every team that needed to re-scrutineer up to three and four times went before us in the line, we did not get a chance to scrutineer until friday. This is the day when all the static events take place, and we had to pause the scrutineering to participate in the events.
On saturday morning, we continued scrutineering. Unfortunately with only the brake and noise test left, we missed the acceleration and skidpad events! At least after lunch, we passed the scrutineering and were able to run in the autocross event with two drivers.
Sunday is the day when the endurance race takes place. During the evening of saturday and early sunday morning, the car was prepared for race. At about 10.30 a.m. we started to race. The car worked great, but right before the driver change, the pneumatic shifting system was overheated and the pressure regulator broke. This meant that the second driver was stuck in second gear! The race could continue, but in a slower pace. After about 7 laps, the chain wheel mounting to the differential broke, and sadly we had to quit the race.
The team is still satisfied with the competition, and we sure have learned a lot. Now, we are aiming to take the R6 to Silverstone in 2010!

Friday 07th of August, 2009, 23:36

Today we have attended the main static events at the FSG competition! At 11:00 we rolled our car into the Cost event, where judges go through the cost report with some teammembers. About an hour later, the Design event started. This is when experienced engineers from the motor industry go through and judge the whole design of the car. We can't wait to see the results...
Unfortunately, the car has not gone through scrutineering. It has not been our turn until this morning, and with all of the static events during the day we have been short of time to complete scrutineering. Tomorrow, the dynamic events will start!
Wednesday 05th of August, 2009, 23:30
Today, the team arrived at a warm and sunny Hockenheimring. The car is now standing in the pit and some last preparations for tomorrows "scrutineering" have been made, so hopefully we will be driving it in the test area tomorrow evening!
Tuesday 04th of August, 2009, 19:17
During the summer, the car has undergone some serious testing. The engine has been tuned, many different suspension setups have been tried, and the drivers have had a chance get a feel for the car. The KTH R6 has also undergone a "facelift", pictures of the updated design will come shortly...
In the next few days we will keep you updated with pictures and news from the competition, so stay tuned!

Saturday 18th of October, 2008, 15:48

So it was finally the 11th of October and time for the eagerly awaited kickoff for the KTH-Racing team, of course with racing as the main theme. Together we arrived to the track, everybody with high expectations. Now it was time for the newcomers to compare their racing skills with the more experienced builders and drivers.
There were ten carts on the startline, and we were divided into teams of three. With systematic and as timeefficient changes of drivers as possible, the teams were fighting about the points.
The course contained a lot of curves of different types so it should have paid of with a smooth and controlled driving, but because the track was narrow fights became very physical!
The members of each team who were waiting for their turn to drive, followed the race on the monitor from the side. Of course the race was completed with a champagneshower for the first, second and the third team. And furthermore a nice sandwich for all drivers.
After this we went to KTH to watch a movie and have some snack.
It was really great, however, personally I will not hesitate to race for a longer time and with faster carts, but i’m sure that the kick-off created need for speed, which will help us in the construction of our own racing car! /field report: Joakim Tänndal

The results have been made official, we are now back in Stockholm again and it is therefore time to sum up last week's competition at HockenheimRing.
Things started out extremely well. We went through scrutineering in one attempt and finished of the rest of the technical inspection fairly smoothly. The static events last Friday generally went quite good with decent scores in all three events. The most enjoyable one was the design score of 100 points making us 17th overall. The dynamics started out with a little trouble; the clutch wouldn't operate properly and the chain tension was also an issue. We fixed it good enough to get results in both skidpad and acceleration, but the scores were low.
For the afternoon sprint session we managed to tune the car well enough for a 14th place overall, giving us a late starting position in the endurance. The first endurance run went excellent and we ran faster than a lot of well respected cars. Unfortunately, when time came for the driver change, some oil had found its way out from the catch tank and we weren't allowed to get back out on the track.
We would of course like to congratulate our Dutch friends from TU Delft for winning an extremely close competition.
Here is a brief results overview:
Business Plan Presentation - 51.75/75.00 pts - 41st place
Engineering Design - 100.00/150.00 pts - 17th place
Cost Analysis - 71.97/100.00 pts - 46th place
Skidpad - 22.57/50.00 pts - 41st place
Acceleration - 11.51/75.00 pts - 57th place
Sprint - 114.51/150.00 pts - 14th place
Endurance - DNF
Overall Place Dynamics - 43rd - 148.58/675.00 pts
Overall Place - 42nd - 372.00/1000.00 pts
This means that this year's project is close to an end. However, we still have one or two more events as well as a surprise or two so keep your eyes open!
Sunday 10th of August, 2008, 17:44

Endurance over
We have just completed our first stint, but the officials stopped us during the driver change. Unfortunately, quite a bit of oil had leaked into the catch tank and Robert never got a chance to start his drive. This means that Formula Student Germany 2008 is over for our part and we can at least be happy for finishing top 20 in the Design Event and for being the fastest car on the track until the oil leakage stopped us.
KTH Racing says over and out from Hockenheim, but we'll give you results and other information as soon as we can.
Sunday 10th of August, 2008, 17:03
Sunday 10th of August, 2008, 08:22
In just a few minutes the final dynamic event will start. Our drivers are currently walking around the track trying to get a feel fo it, since it has changed a little compared to yesterday's sprint race. Because we posted such a fast sprint time we now know for sure that we will be starting in the afternoon session. We have starting number 51 but the exact time depends on how many cars before us in the list are able to start.
Keep an eye open on the site and on the live broadcast for further updates.
Saturday 09th of August, 2008, 23:53
Georg's final run in the sprint event gave a time of 55.98 seconds and this gave us 114.51 (out of 150) points total, which was enough or a 14th place. This gives us the advantage of getting to run endurance during the afternoon tomorrow, somthing that gives us more time to prepare the car optimally.
As soon as we know a more exact starting time tomorrow we'll let you know. Please remember that you are able to stream live from the competition track here.
Saturday 09th of August, 2008, 21:32
We just received the official results from this morning's skidpad and acceleration events.
The skidpad run was ok, but due to an unfortunate misjudge in car setup the average time was a little slower then expected. An average of 5.66 seconds puts us roughly 0.5 seconds behind the event winner and that means 22.57 points (out of 50) and a 41st place.
As mentioned before, the clutch didn't work properly during acceleration and as a result of this we ended up with a time of 5.52 seconds, giving us 11.51 (out of 75) points and a 57th place in the event.
The sprint runs looked very promising and we'll now spend the night with preparing the car for endurance tomorrow.
Saturday 09th of August, 2008, 20:09

Sprint race completed
After the acceleration runs the team members worked hard in order to fix the persisting clutch problems. Robert was our first driver for the sprint events and he started off with a very solid time just under 1 minute. When Georg got in the car it was a little reluctant to start but once he got it going he made an extremely tidy lap of 55.98 seconds, which should secure a decent starting position for tomorrow's endurance.
The rest of the evening will be spent in the pit in order to prepare KTHR5 for tomorrow. We are also anticipating to receive the results from this morning's acceleration and skidpad runs.
Saturday 09th of August, 2008, 20:03

Acceleration completed
After a few problems with the clutch we finally made it to Hockenheim's start line straight for the acceleration event. Despite the problems, Anders and Harry did a fine job of taking the car cross the finishing line with a best time of 5.52 seconds. It will probably not give us a very high score but we have at least driven the event.
Saturday 09th of August, 2008, 12:35
As suspected the Real Case of the cost analysis was a little weak with only 17 out of 40 possible points, but Joakim received 37 out of 40 points for the discussion about the manufacturing costs of KTHR5 and that together with a thoroughly written report gave us 71.97 points (out of 100) and a 46th place overall.
We are currently in the middle of the acceleration and expect to give you an update on that shortly.
Saturday 09th of August, 2008, 12:12
Even though the design event hasn't finished yet there are still some results available. The top ten cars will enter tonight's design finals and unfortunately we won't be taking part there. However, with 100 points (out of 150) and a tied 17th place overall we still beat many well respected teams. Once we receive the results from the cost event we can sum up all the static events.
Saturday 09th of August, 2008, 10:43

Skidpad completed
KTHR5 has just finished the first dynamic event with two solid skidpad runs from Henning. With a fastest time of 5.42 seconds we are currently in a pretty good position but teams have until 1pm to perform in the skidpad.
The car will now be set up for acceleration and until then we can only hope that the track remains dry.
Saturday 09th of August, 2008, 09:12
Today is the very first day when the audience actually get to see all the cars in action. During the morning we are supposed to run acceleration and skidpad and starting from 2pm it's time for the sprint event. Starting today it's also possible to watch the event live thanks to one of the main sponsors Brunel GmbH.

Saturday 09th of August, 2008, 09:04
The results from the business plan presentation were published a few minutes ago. Our presentation was enough for a tied 41st place with just over 50 points of 75 possible. Congratulations to the winners from TU Delft.
Friday 08th of August, 2008, 19:01
Cost Analysis
Immediately after the design judging it was time for the cost analysis. The judges questioned Joakim and Henning on the written Cost Report as well as the "life-like" Real Case Situation. The report was credited as highly detailed but the real case could have been better prepared.
Friday 08th of August, 2008, 18:57

Engineering Design
A few minutes ago the team finished the Design Event. The judges seemed to like the design solutions on KTHR5, but we didn't have time for any instant feedback. We will know how it went once the results have been published.
Friday 08th of August, 2008, 18:54

Brake test finished
Once we had worked out the problems with the chain drive transmission we finally managed to pass the brake test on a slightly moist track. This means that KTHR5 is through the entire technical inspection and we can start to test drive in order to tune the car optimally for Saturday and Sunday.
Friday 08th of August, 2008, 13:15
Henning and Fredrik finished their Business Plan Presentation an hour ago. The judges thought the presentation layout and overall structure was very good, but perhaps we should have focused a bit more on the actual factory layout and other issues related to that. Due to some problems with the chain tension we still haven't been able to roll out to the brake test, but we hope to complete it before it's time to present KTHR5 to the design ad cost judges later this afternoon.
Keep an eye open for additional updates later!
Thursday 07th of August, 2008, 18:35

Noise test finished
A couple of minutes ago we passed the noise test with the incredible result of 99.9 dB(A). Earlier during the afternoon we also weighed KTHR5 and even though it's a little bit heavier than it was in England a few weeks ago, the passed technical inspection definitely makes up for it.
Unfortunately we didn't have time to pass the brake test before it closed for the day, which means that that will be our primary task tomorrow morning.
We will keep you updated once we progress through tomorrow's static events. The target times are:
11.45 - Business Plan Presentation
16.10 - Design Judging
17.10 - Cost Judging
Stay tuned for more info tomorrow!
Thursday 07th of August, 2008, 16:08

Suspension design reviewed
One of the main sponsors of Formula Student Germany, ZF, sponsors an award for Best Suspension Design. The already awarded monoshock system and the design of critical suspension components along with the philosophy around the car's vehicle dynamics was judged by ZF employees earlier today. We are still awaiting the results but we were one of the ten teams that made it to the finals so it looks quite promising.
Thursday 07th of August, 2008, 16:03

Tilt table finished
The tilt test has now been completed without difficulties or problems. Now awaits the noise test where we have to prove that we have a sound level below 110 dB and when that has been done we just have to prove that we can lock all four wheels before we are allowed to start driving and tuning the car for Saturday and Sundya. Stay tuned for more info.
Thursday 07th of August, 2008, 12:55

Technical Inspection finished
Last night's hard work paid off earlier today. For the first time in the history of KTH Racing we managed to complete the Technical Inspection on the first attempt. The judges were extremely happy with how well we had prepared our car and we will continue the thorough preparations in order to complete the tilt, noise and brake tests before this day is over.
Wednesday 06th of August, 2008, 21:44
Arrival at Hockenheim
After a few weeks of testing and preparations the team has finally unloaded the car at HockenheimRing. Tomorrow Thursday is scrutineering day and the car is right now undergoing a final check-up. Stay tuned for more info during the rest of this week!

Most Innovative Use of Electronics
Our mechatronics department have spent the entire year developing a system for continuous adjustment of the roll damping on KTHR5 and last weekend at Silverstone all their hard work paid off. In collaboration with our vehicle dynamics team, the group has designed a system which basically works like an electronic stability system, but from a totally different point of view! Resumé of the competition
Formula Student UK 2008 is now officially over and it is time to sum up. As mentioned before we did well in the cost and presentation events and the design score is excellent. 101 out of 150 points brings us in the top 25 teams and if we hadn't lost points due to insufficient calculations on the impact attenuator, we would have ended up in a tied 15th place. The dynamic events aren't really worth mentioning, we had trouble with everything from the gear shifting system to the engine and the total score of 212.86 points gives us a 39th place overall.
We would like to congratulate Rennteam Stuttgart for their amazing achievement of not only winning the overall competition, but also winning all four dynamic events. Congratulations to Chalmers FS, who once again finished the endurance race and became the best Swedish team. Congratulations to Lund University, who beat us by 2 points in the design event. A special congratulations to Karlstad University for their first entry in the competition. Hopefully they feel motivated to come back next year with more experience.
One more thing, we also received an award before we left Silverstone. More info on that later.

Static results and first dynamics day
After a nervous wait we finally received the results from Friday's static events. The business plan presentation was appreciated by the judges and with limited preparations we ended up in 23rd place with 50.36 out of 100 points. The cost judges were tough against many teams and we ended up with 54 points and a tied 49th place.
Because of some problems during the morning we didn't have time to run the acceleration or skidpad. We managed to set a time in the sprint lap, but with a broken shifting system we jst barely made it across the finish line, This however gives us the advantage to start late tomorrow in the endurance, which gives us time to fix the shifting system.
In terms of the overall competition, we obviously don't have a chance to win with today's trouble, but we are working hard to be able to finish the endurance properly. We'll report back tomorrow afternoon, over and out from a wet and cold Silverstone.

Finally driving on the wrong side of the road
After a Thursday filled with problems during the transport to England, electrical malfunctions, etc. we are finally installed in our pit at Silverstone. Today we completed all static events rather successfully. The cost judging went well and all team members were able to answer the questions they were given. The business plan presentation was credited as "professional" and "very good", but as always we could have improved some details. The design judging went well as well, the judges liked our report as well as some of the ideas that are implemented on KTHR5. The team will now prepare for a final scrutineering round tomorrow morning for some minor adjustments and then we can finaly let the race begin! Stay tuned for more info during the Saturday.

New webpage section - videos
KTH Racing enjoyed the early summer sun on the F15 landing strip outside Söderhamn this weekend. 15 team members participated in what turned out to be a successful test in many ways. The new pneumatic gear shifting system was successfully tested on KTHR3, but the R3 was later forced to a permanent pit stop due to an engine malfunction.
KTH01 kept on going throughout the entire driving session and our new team members gained valuable experience in driving, adjusting and repairing the car.
Also check out the new video section and the pictures from the test.

On Friday two groups of students from a vocational training programme in Värmland. They roughly recieved the same information and Anders and Fredrik, who hosted the presentation, felt that it was very appreciated.
Pictures will come in the Gallery, keep your eyes open.
